What is Cheilosis and Do You Need to Worry About It?
Posted on 7/20/2019 by Office
When it comes to medicine, there are plenty of terms that people can barely pronounce and have no idea what they mean. The term cheilosis is not something everyone knows about. They do not have any idea what it is and what it means for their health. The problem is not that they do not know the name cheilosis, but instead, that they may actually suffer from it. In that case it is time to learn what it is and if they need to worry about it. The Basic Definition Cheilosis is also called cheilitis. It refers to inflammation and cracking in the corners of the mouth. It can happen on either side of the mouth, but most commonly affects both sides of the mouth. It is often painful for the person that suffers from it. The Causes In order to know if you need to worry about Cheilosis, it is best to know the causes of it. The most common reason for a person to suffer from this condition is because of poor fitting dentures. When dentures do not fit properly, it is often difficult for the upper and lower jaw to properly separate. People who have a habit of licking the corners of their mouth or who have moisture forming in the folds of their mouth are also more likely to deal with Cheilosis. What to Do Cheilosis can affect a person both physically and emotionally. It can hurt the self-esteem because of the appearance of the cracked and swollen corners of the mouth. It can also cause pain. Because of that, it is a good idea to try to do something about it. The solution is to figure out what the cause is and correct the cause. Getting better fitting dentures or correcting a bad habit will stop the problem and the body will heal if given time and some medications.
