Should A Dental Crown Feel Normal When First Put In?

Dental Crown Fairmount Dental Center OR 97302Anytime you have dental work done, it may take a day or two for your mouth to adjust after the numbing wears off.

It is hard to determine how your bite will feel while you are still under the effects of the anesthetic, but our dental staff will do everything possible to make you as comfortable as possible. So, should a dental crown feel normal when first put in?

What is A Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to cover it. Our dentist will recommend a crown to fix a tooth's shape, for example, if it's broken, to restore its shape, or for aesthetic purposes, if you want to improve your smile.

There are other medical reasons for a dental crown, such as to hold a dental bridge in place, to cover an implant, to cover discolored teeth, for severely decayed teeth, or to protect a weak tooth.

Several materials are used to build dental crowns, including porcelain, which can be made to match the color of your teeth, metals, such as alloys, or stainless steel. Each material will feel different in your mouth and will need adjustments at a follow-up appointment.

Depending on the extent of the dental work done and the condition of the tooth where the new crown will be placed, the discomfort following the procedure will vary from patient to patient. There may be some pain by the jaw, gum or when you bite down at first. Some patients also feel sensitivity to hot or cold liquids. These problems should subside within a few days.

Applying an ice pack to the side of your mouth where you had the procedure can help with jaw pain and over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, taken regularly, can help with general discomfort. If these symptoms, don't improve, please call our office.
